The global revolutionary

My great-great granduncle Angel Dimovski was born 1914 in Skopje. He was an industrial worker, but also a politically active member of the global communist movement.

In 1930 he went to Paris where he continued his political activities in the French Communist Party. As many other communist and other democrats, he volunteered to join the international brigades in the Spanish Civil War. He was one of the earliest members of the brigades and most probably he was member of the international Balkan battalion called Dimitrov (after the famous Bulgarian communist Georgi Dimitrov who defiantly defended himself in the mock Leipzig trials in Nazi Germany after the Reichstag fire in 1933). He died in March 1937 during the famous Battle of Jarama. Nowadays there is a street in Skopje named after him and also a square where his statue is supposed to be erected.

Global History

  • The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) – the Spanish Civil War was a prequel to WWII. The military overthrow of the Spanish republic was led by the general Francisco Franco supported by Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini, whereas the republic was aided by the antifascists (democrats, lefties, communists) and many freedom loving individuals joined the International Brigades to defend the Spanish Republic.

  • Ernest Hemingway – the famous American writer Hemingway was a war correspondent during the Spanish Civil War and a supporter of the republic.

  • Pete Seeger - The famous American singer Pete Seeger has composed a song about the Battle of Jarama.
